Hostel ka khana toh bekar hi hota hai!” By now, you must have lost count of the number of times you have heard collegians cribbing about the quality of food at their hostels and canteens. And several Bollywood movies have only reinforced this belief. However, it’s heartening to note that there are educational institutes where the scenario is just the opposite. Recently, the Indian Institute of Technology, Gandhinagar (IIT-Gn) was recognized for its impeccable food quality and hygiene standards and awarded the ‘Eat Right Campus award’ by the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI). The institute became the first one in Gujarat to receive this award, which was given after much deliberation and multiple audits. IIT-Gn ticked all the necessary boxes when it came to food safety, setting a benchmark for other campuses in the city.
WE ENSURE HEALTHY & NUTRITIOUS FOOD FOR ALL: IIT-GN DIRECTOR
IIT-Gn rceived the award after numerous audits were conducted at the institute’s mess, canteens and third-party food joints. The audits, carried out through a checklist based on five parameters, saw the campus receiving a fivestar rating from FSSAI. The audits were conducted by local authorities, and the award was given after the changes were implemented.
Sudhir K Jain, director, IIT-Gn, says, “We believe in the ‘students first’ policy and focus on the well-being and betterment of our students, faculty and the community. We make conscious efforts to ensure healthy, nutritious and safe food for all. This is a welcome recognition for the efforts of our team of students, faculty, staff, vendors and vendors’ staff. We are grateful to all of them.”
