Indore: Check selling of tobacco near educational institutes

Indore: While educational institutes hold seminars for staying away from addiction and smoking, a lot tobacco shop can be found near their campuses. The Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products (Prohibition of Advertisement and Regulation of Trade and Commerce, Production, Supply and Distribution) Act, 2003 or COTPA, 2003 is an Act of Parliament of India enacted in 2003 to prohibit advertisement of, and to provide for regulation of trade and commerce in, and production, supply and distribution of cigarettes and other tobacco products in India.

According to the provisions in the Act, tobacco products cannot be sold to person below the age of 18 years, and in places within 100 metres radius from the outer boundary of an institution of education, which includes schools, colleges and institutions of higher learning established or recognised by an appropriate authority.

Parents are often worried about their children being drawn to such addictions because of their easy availability. A concerned parent Chanchal Kaur said, “I trust my son, but it is not good to expose him to a cigarette shop right outside his school everyday.”

She feels regular visit to such places might tempt the teenagers. An educator and counsellor VarshaSawlani said, “Teenagers and youngsters are most prone to addictions and such exposure works as temptation that can lure them to addictions.”

Planning action

We understand the issue and it affects even university students everyday. We would be taking into notice the shop nearby and taking an action against it. Ajay Verma, DAVV Registrar

Mapping done, action to follow

Based on what I have been told about the latest information, mapping of such shops has been completed. Once I receive the report of mapping, we would be further taking an action to ensure that students are not exposed to such shops. Lokesh Jatav, Collector.
